Wet Ride to Mnt Takao and Sagamiko

Monday 9th August, 2021

95km (total ascent 1,163m)

Set off early in the dry but as I got closer to Takao, the rain came (which was quite welcome – keeping things cool). Down the other side of Takao and across the lake – all in light/medium rain. Though, the rain couldn’t last (much as I wanted it) so the last 20km through Kawasaki and Machida was pretty hot!

No photos on this ride…

One Circuit Around Okutama

Sunday July 18th, 2021

83.1km (total ascent 1,290m)

Drive to Itsukaichi and then set off (in theory before the sun gets too strong but even at 7:30am it was already beating down). Get to Tomin No Mori by around 10am and then after a quick break down to Okutama. The last 30km from Okutama Lake back to Itsukaichi was a bit of an ordeal with almost cloudless skies and ferocious heat! Lots of cold water over my head needed before I could drive back home!!!

KIWL 500:5000 Challenge #6: Tamako

Saturday 26th June, 2021

94.35 km (total ascent 329m)

Distance ride today (without all those pesky hills!). Set out from home, through Kokubunji, towards Tamako. Cycled close to the lake and then past it. Decided to head back to the lake to ride at least part of the cycling course (which involved climbing a woodland path which almost disappeared in the undergrowth at one point). Cycled around part of the lake and then headed back to the route through Akishima and then onto the Tama River Cycling Road, back home for lunch!

Then follow the Marchen Road across the hill tops and down into the Chikuma valley. Head towards Saku and then take the Nobeyama Kogen Salad Road to the Yatsugatake Kogen Line towards Kobuchisawa. Then back to Hara and to the Minshuku.

KIWL 500:5000 Challenge #4: Mnt Fuji

Sunday 13th June, 2021

111.34km (total ascent 1,571m)

After driving to Gotemba, set off in a general upward direction! Mnt Fuji was completely shrouded in mist and clouds but I’m sure it was there!! Keeping the mountain on my right hand side, cycled clockwise around the foot hills, passing Lake Yamanaka and back down to Gotemba. Aside from dropping my smartphone (and breaking the glass!) and getting rained on during the higher stretches, it was a lovely ride!

KIWL 500:5000 Challenge #3: Chichibu

Sunday 6th June, 2021

104.36km (total ascent 1,529m)

Drive to Ome (which is a delightful old town). From there, an instant uphill towards Naguri. Then over the hills and down into the Chichibu valley. Another (very steep) climb to get over the hills to Ogawa. Finally, back to Ome (with a couple more climbs just for fits and giggles!). Got lost a couple of times and at one point the road became mud (I really should take more notice of the “no through road” signs!).

Chiba Peninsula

Sunday 23rd May, 2021

103.4km (total ascent 1,100m)

Drive to Futtsumisaki and start from there, heading directly over the hills to Kimitsu and then on to Kamogawa. Back across the peninsula to Katsuyama and follow the coast road (spectacular under the clear blue sky) back to Futssumisaki. Terrific weather for the ride. Stopped for lunch at a “yasudashogakko michi-no-eki” (which was absolutely packed).
Note to self – not many convenience stores along this route!
